Ladies Division 5 – Avenue 4 winning draw v Fishbourne 2 (2-2) – Sheila Drummond, Noelia Munoz, Chloe Treagust, Christine Hill
Match report
Planes, Trains & Automobiles plus the usual bounding Labradors & boisterous toddlers – yes, it had to be our turn to visit Fishbourne Tennis Club! Even after a deliberately prolonged warmup, our ladies were still grappling to deal with the ball at head or shoulder height on their bouncy hard courts. Changing position or timing didn’t seem to improve things. Our opponents, although not possessed with any real weapons in their game, played with consistency & waited for us to make the mistakes. Chris & Chloe were unlucky to lose their 2nd set tie-break, while Sheila & Noelia were pipped 10-7 in their championship tie-break. So at the halfway stage, Avenue were 2-0 down. But after a chat, a regroup, a snack & an inner rallying cry, we found our way in the second half of the match. Fishbourne’s lobs & drop shots were dealt with more efficiently & we turned the tide on them. Both rubbers were won in straight sets with Sheila & Noelia winning their second set tiebreak 7-0. Fishbourne seemed slightly stunned & definitely miffed. This seemed to be reflected in them jumping up & starting to clear away the plates about 10 minutes into the (somewhat meagre) post-match tea!
On a really positive note, this was Noelia’s debut for Ladies 4, & she proved herself a very worthy addition to the squad. Throughout the match she ran & ran….& then some more! And less than 18 hours afterwards she was on the starting line for the Great South Run, putting in a fantastic time of 1:31:58, running and running …..& then some more. Well done Noelia! Sheila Drummond
