Mike Phillips
Squash & Racketball Instructor
Mike started playing squash at Kenilworth squash club, Warwickshire in 1973 aged 14 for something to do in the winter when he couldn’t play tennis.
Within 6 weeks of picking up a racket he was playing for Warwickshire u/16 in the junior inter county championships.
From there he progressed finishing his junior career as the Welsh no.1 in the 1978 world junior championships and reached the last 8 of the individual event.
As a senior Mike played inter county squash for Warwickshire, then from 1986 Cornwall, in 1982 he made his full senior international debut for Wales.
He has since gone on to represent Wales at O/40 and O/45 levels collecting 23 international caps to date.
Mike has won 4 men’s Cornwall county titles and was ranked no.1 in Cornwall for 4 consecutive years.
Following his move to Chichester in September 2007 where he took up the position of club squash professional he was experiencing prolonged pain in his right hip, further exploration showed that he needed a hip replacement which he underwent 11 months later in August 2008.
Months of rehabilitation followed, then the following may some 8 months after the operation Mike entered and reached the semi-finals of the national racketball championships o50. Mike had only been playing racketball for 2 months.
This event only encouraged and spurred him on and 12 months later, (20 months after undergoing the hip replacement surgery) Mike was crowned British o50 racketball champion.
Mike continued to push forward with racketball and won 3 further British titles twice at o55 and he is the current o60 British champion.
Throughout his 50s he represented the Sussex men’s team at racketball and was part of the team that won 4 intercounty titles.
As a coach throughout his career Mike has been the South West and South East head coach, he has also been a junior county coach in 3 different counties, Cornwall, Sussex and Hampshire. Mike has coached many juniors to junior county titles over the years and has developed players from complete beginners into top 10 for their age group in the national rankings.
He gained his level 1 qualification 40 years ago and has coached squash ever since obtaining his level 3 in 1994.
Mike is an experienced level 3 squash & racketball coach with extensive experience, he is available now for Adult 1-1 Squash & Racketball Coaching.
