With 3 courts including one glass backed, there are plenty of opportunities to play

Table Tennis

With a thriving social table tennis scene, and 2 teams that play in the Portsmouth and District Table tennis league, there’s something for all standards

Fitness

Gym with cardio equipment, resistance machines and free weights along with a selection of group exercise classes

Social

We have our own bar and function room and a thriving social community holding regular social activities and events

Our Team

The Avenue is run by a dedicated team of Committee members and staff, as a not for profit members club, our small team of paid staff are supported by voluntary committee members.

I have been a member of the Avenue for many years now. I first joined as a keen teenager and following a break whilst at University I re-joined upon return to the area.

I joined the The Avenue in 1981 and have played for the ladies’ squash team since then. Over the years I have been ladies squash captain, run junior squash coaching and junior squash teams and been on development committees. In my 30’s and 40’s I achieved 16 ranking in Hampshire and played for the second team for 10 years or more and was awarded the county colours from Pam Blowe.

I have been a keen tennis player for many years and joined The Avenue 3 years ago. The Avenue has given me great opportunities for improving my tennis and as a someone fairly new to the area has proved to be a great place to make new friends.

When I retired in 2017 I wanted to reconnect with tennis which I had enjoyed so much as a youngster. I made the best choice joining The Avenue as the Club is so welcoming and inclusive and has such a friendly membership. I also played squash as a junior at Seacourt and I am planning to learn Racquetball in the near future.

I am a retired accountant with almost 40 years’ experience in local government finance, ranging from Leisure Services to Housing and the Environment. More recently I have been a trustee for Horizon Leisure for 6 years and now I’m ready for the new challenge as Honorary Treasurer for the club.

I spent my whole career in the Ministry of Defence (Navy) retiring in 2006. A Naval Architect by profession, with additional experience in Engineering, Project Management, Procurement, Business Improvement and Safety Management.

Squash Secretary

Although I dabbled in Squash a little in my late teens, it was not till I was forced to give up Rugby through a neck injury at the age of 24, that I really started to play. Although I am a distinctive average player, there was a time when I was quite good. I think it was a Tuesday. In recent years I’ve taken up racketball and last year, started to play Tennis. I have been a member of Woking Squash Club since 1996, retaining an off peak membership.

Fitness Representative

I am currently the Management Committee Gym and Fitness representative . I have been a member of The Avenue Lawn Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club for over 30 years. In 1986 I joined as a social member, in 1993 I progressed to a gym and fitness member and , three years later I started helping to run the gym. I was a member of the General Committee, for 15 years and at the same time I trained as a YMCA fitness instructor and later as a Stott Pilates instructor.

I have been a member of The Avenue for just under 4 years, so still relatively new and learning the ropes. I have recently been voted onto the Management committee as the House representative, which is both exciting and challenging. I am learning on the job and have found that the role covers everything from the drains in the car park to the club house roof and more besides. All of this is a bit of a departure from my Professional Career as an IT Programme Delivery Consultant.

After teacher training at Goldsmith’s College from 1961 to 1964 I taught infants for two years.

From 1983 to 1992 I had various part time jobs – marketing for a local builder; selling new / re-sale properties locally and in Spain; organising and running hospitality events / conferences for various organisations all over the world and assisting in promoting Barcelona as an International Conference Venue.
