Management Committee

Iain Cameron
President
Covering two periods I have supported this fantastic Club as Chairman for a total of 7 years and I now help the enthusiastic committees as President.
My aim is to support the active committees, the terrific staff, the happy members, and this jewel of a Club.

Binky Hallett
Chairman
I am a retired junior schoolteacher and want to see our juniors build and thrive in squash and tennis.
My greatest achievement since becoming Chairman has to have been finding Ashley Neaves and lately Zoe Shardlow.
The club has provided many opportunities for myself and my family during those nearly 40 years and I want to put something back in.
I am very keen to see our Development proposals progress, to enhance our already lively and successful club and enable it to reach its potential.

Jenny Morris
Honorary Secretary
The Avenue is a great Club for sport and social activities, and I want to help it to continue to run smoothly, develop further and remain known as a place where all are welcomed.

Angy Bryson
Assistant Honorary Secretary
The tennis and golf clubs around us have all developed their facilities over the last few years and now is the time for us to do the same and I trust my Marketing and Sales skills gained from a career in Technology will help me contribute during this exciting phase of the Club.
I know many of you from the tennis courts but not so many from the other area of the Club , but please all feel free to contact me if you have any questions or ideas that you would like to share with the Committee -my details are available on the Club membership page.

Mel Smith
Treasurer
I have always been an enthusiastic sportsman, albeit of limited ability, and enjoy running round the squash court. In a previous life I was a keen local league footballer and road runner, competing in the London Marathon on three occasions and New York twice.

Mike Colbourne
Tennis Secretary
I spent my whole career in the Ministry of Defence (Navy) retiring in 2006. A Naval Architect by profession, with additional experience in Engineering, Project Management, Procurement, Business Improvement and Safety Management.
In June 2012 I was appointed Tennis Secretary and soon after joined the Management Committee.
I chaired the Development Committee from August 2013 to September 2014 and headed discussions with Havant Borough Council to join Havant Hockey and relocate to a new site in Emsworth. This proposal came to an end when 71% of Avenue club members voted against it.
I also chaired the Development Committee from December 2016 to April 2017, which recommended a two-storey extension at the front of the clubhouse; however, this was not taken forward.
In 2017 I was part of selection committee for the appointment of the Club’s new Head Tennis Coach.
I have been the Tournament Director for ITF Seniors and LTA County Week tournaments.
I have written several papers aimed at improving the Club’s operation including:
a. The Avenue LTS&FC Strategic Review – February 2015.
b. Marketing at The Avenue – October 2016.
My desire is to see the Club improve its sports and social facilities for the benefit of all members.

Danny Jones
Squash Secretary

Maggie Clarke
Fitness Representative
Fitness and wellbeing have been a long-standing passion of mine, and I am keen to ensure the continued growth and success of the Gym and Fitness section at The Avenue. I am a regular attendee of several different classes each week and also help in the gym on a voluntary basis. I’d like to see the section go from strength to strength and eventually one day have a Fitness Studio/Multi-purpose function room, and an extended gym.

Richard Marston
House
Please come and see me and share your ideas for our club with regards to improvements that we can make small and big.

Sue Sparshatt
Social Secretary
From 1983 to 1992 I had various part time jobs – marketing for a local builder; selling new / re-sale properties locally and in Spain; organising and running hospitality events / conferences for various organisations all over the world and assisting in promoting Barcelona as an International Conference Venue.
In 1992 I started working permanently for the Cheltenham and Gloucester Building Society customer services until retirement in 2006.
From 2005 – 2008 I was a member of Lord Mayor of Portsmouth’s fund-raising committee.
I re-joined the Club sometime after as a tennis member and have been involved with organising social events and marketing.
I have also regularly been a Tournament Host for the ITF Seniors and LTA County Week tournaments.
I am currently the Social representative on the Management Committee.
To improve the Club, I would like to see the bar / social area upgraded and extended to attract more new members and boost income.

Dave Caulk

Assistant Honorary Treasurer

Justine Brown
Office Manager
I have been connected to the club for over 20 years joining with my husband Grahame when we moved to Havant from Chichester in 1999.
Whilst running my business, in 2010 the opportunity came up in the Avenue office to work one day a week, relishing the opportunity to try my hand at something new I applied for the position and was successful. Although I was used to the administrative side of running a business, I was keen to hone my office skills and took myself to college to gain Microsoft qualifications. Over the course of the next 2 years I increased my office hours and in October 2012 I was promoted to Office Manager.
Alongside my position at The Avenue I continued with my outside catering business and also catered for big club events such as County week and club parties until 2017 when after over 30 years in the catering industry I decided to hang up my apron!
My work at the club is very varied In September this year I will celebrate 10 years working at the Avenue and there really could be no better place to work than looking out over our beautiful grass courts on a daily basis.
My spare time is busy, i have 3 grandchildren who keep me on my toes! i play tennis although not as often as I would like, and I like to keep fit walking, running & enjoying the fitness classes at the club, Grahame and I love to travel with a particular love of Asia.

Sarah Grady
Admin Assistant
I took a break in my career to have my 2 children but continued to High Jump. After getting an injury I had to stop, so decided to combine my interest in sport and restart my career and trained as Fitness Instructor in 1992, which fitted in well with my growing family. I went on to teach various classes, including Step and Boxercise, in the local area for the next 17 years.
In 2009, an opportunity presented itself to teach fitness classes at The Avenue, first teaching Legs, Bums and Tums and then Spinning. After 3 years I got offered the job as Office Assistant and really love working in the office, with Justine, and I think we make a great team. The role has grown over the years and more recently I have taken on the role of Studio Co-Ordinator and overseeing the social media aspects of the Club.
During my spare time I enjoy cooking, photography and spending time with my friends and family where I have 2 small grandchildren to keep me busy.

Kim McCormick
Book Keeper/Bar Manager
I began my working career at The Sussex Brewery, Emsworth in 1985, working my way through the ranks from Chief Washer Up to General Manager before leaving to raise my family in 1996.
When the pub changed hands in 2012, I was made redundant, but as luck would have it, The Avenue were looking for a new Finance Assistant at this time and I was the successful candidate.
As the Finance Assistants job is a solitary one, when a member of staff retired, i took the opportunity to became one of the club’s bar associates to enable me to meet the members and get back to my roots behind the bar, and when the Bar Manager position became available a year later, it was a natural step for me to fill the role.
More recently, I have dipped my toe into the world of tennis, receiving lessons from Ashley and his team, but my two Border Collie’s take up most of her spare time with long walks and training for local Agility competitions.
The one thing i enjoy more than anything else is organising a good party, so if you have something to celebrate, give me a call!
