I have been a member of the Avenue for many years now. I first joined as a keen teenager and following a break whilst at University I re-joined upon return to the area.

I dabbled in tennis for a few years becoming quite adept at hitting a ball of two out of court and over the fence. I join in with some of the fitness classes, but my main game(s) are squash and racket ball, the latter seeing me hit the heady heights of Avenue Racket ball Champion in 2013!

Covering two periods I have supported this fantastic Club as Chairman for a total of 7 years and I now help the enthusiastic committees as President.

My aim is to support the active committees, the terrific staff, the happy members, and this jewel of a Club.

I joined the The Avenue in 1981 and have played for the ladies’ squash team since then. Over the years I have been ladies squash captain, run junior squash coaching and junior squash teams and been on development committees. In my 30’s and 40’s I achieved 16 ranking in Hampshire and played for the second team for 10 years or more and was awarded the county colours from Pam Blowe.

I have won our squash closed tournament twice and been runner up many times! My husband was a squash member but had now moved to tennis. Both my sons have played in junior and senior squash teams and Michael is the current Men’s Captain. I was an active member of fitness classes for 25 years.

I am a retired junior schoolteacher and want to see our juniors build and thrive in squash and tennis.

My greatest achievement since becoming Chairman has to have been finding Ashley Neaves and lately Zoe Shardlow.

The club has provided many opportunities for myself and my family during those nearly 40 years and I want to put something back in.

I am very keen to see our Development proposals progress, to enhance our already lively and successful club and enable it to reach its potential.

Honorary Secretary

I have been a keen tennis player for many years and joined The Avenue 3 years ago. The Avenue has given me great opportunities for improving my tennis and as a someone fairly new to the area has proved to be a great place to make new friends.

In 2018 I joined the Management Committee, first as Honorary Assistant Treasurer and later I became the Honorary Secretary. As Hon Sec I spend a fair bit of time supporting our great Office team, especially when we need to develop new procedures to help the Club run smoothly and to meet LTA and legal standards. I have history there, as developing practical policies and procedures has been my focus in the world of work.

The Avenue is a great Club for sport and social activities, and I want to help it to continue to run smoothly, develop further and remain known as a place where all are welcomed.

Tennis Secretary

I spent my whole career in the Ministry of Defence (Navy) retiring in 2006. A Naval Architect by profession, with additional experience in Engineering, Project Management, Procurement, Business Improvement and Safety Management.

In 1992 I joined The Avenue as a squash / fitness member, switching to tennis in 2009.

In June 2012 I was appointed Tennis Secretary and soon after joined the Management Committee.

I chaired the Development Committee from August 2013 to September 2014 and headed discussions with Havant Borough Council to join Havant Hockey and relocate to a new site in Emsworth. This proposal came to an end when 71% of Avenue club members voted against it.

I also chaired the Development Committee from December 2016 to April 2017, which recommended a two-storey extension at the front of the clubhouse; however, this was not taken forward.

In 2017 I was part of selection committee for the appointment of the Club’s new Head Tennis Coach.

I have been the Tournament Director for ITF Seniors and LTA County Week tournaments.

I have written several papers aimed at improving the Club’s operation including:
a. The Avenue LTS&FC Strategic Review – February 2015.
b. Marketing at The Avenue – October 2016.

My desire is to see the Club improve its sports and social facilities for the benefit of all members.

I have worked in the Oil & Gas Sector since my apprenticeship with BP Shipping. From Tankers I moved to Oil Rigs, Terminals and Pipelines on five continents. I am now part of an Emergency Response Team, a shared resource between 160 Energy Companies.

I first joined the Avenue LTSC 1992 playing Team Squash for 10 years, re-joining in 2017 when I moved back to the area. Less competitive now I enjoy playing all racket sports and am keen to enter Racketball Tournaments. The Avenue is a great sporting and social facility, I encourage all members to support both aspects their club.

Fitness Representative

I am currently the Management Committee Gym and Fitness representative . I have been a member of The Avenue Lawn Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club for over 30 years. In 1986 I joined as a social member, in 1993 I progressed to a gym and fitness member and , three years later I started helping to run the gym. I was a member of the General Committee, for 15 years and at the same time I trained as a YMCA fitness instructor and later as a Stott Pilates instructor.

In 2006 I began my career as a Pilates instructor and taught at The Avenue for 11 years. Although I have retired from teaching now, I feel I have a lot of experience in the fitness industry, both in small gyms and also larger ones – I was previously Studio Co-ordinator at David Lloyd Gym at Port Solent for five years.

Fitness and wellbeing have been a long-standing passion of mine, and I am keen to ensure the continued growth and success of the Gym and Fitness section at The Avenue. I am a regular attendee of several different classes each week and also help in the gym on a voluntary basis. I’d like to see the section go from strength to strength and eventually one day have a Fitness Studio/Multi-purpose function room, and an extended gym.

I have been a member of The Avenue for just under 4 years, so still relatively new and learning the ropes. I have recently been voted onto the Management committee as the House representative, which is both exciting and challenging. I am learning on the job and have found that the role covers everything from the drains in the car park to the club house roof and more besides. All of this is a bit of a departure from my Professional Career as an IT Programme Delivery Consultant.

I am a keen Tennis player, that I am pleased to say has been enticed back to squash since at The Avenue, now representing The Avenue teams in both sports in various teams and categories. If I am not to be found on the tennis or squash courts, you are likely to find me in our friendly club bar, carrying out important medicinal research.

Please come and see me and share your ideas for our club with regards to improvements that we can make small and big.

Social Secretary

After teacher training at Goldsmith’s College from 1961 to 1964 I taught infants for two years.

From 1983 to 1992 I had various part time jobs – marketing for a local builder; selling new / re-sale properties locally and in Spain; organising and running hospitality events / conferences for various organisations all over the world and assisting in promoting Barcelona as an International Conference Venue.

An active member of the Club from 1985 to 1992 I played tennis (not too well!) and helped with the running of social events.

In 1992 I started working permanently for the Cheltenham and Gloucester Building Society customer services until retirement in 2006.

From 2005 – 2008 I was a member of Lord Mayor of Portsmouth’s fund-raising committee.

I re-joined the Club sometime after as a tennis member and have been involved with organising social events and marketing.

I have also regularly been a Tournament Host for the ITF Seniors and LTA County Week tournaments.

I am currently the Social representative on the Management Committee.

To improve the Club, I would like to see the bar / social area upgraded and extended to attract more new members and boost income.

Justine Brown

Justine Brown

Office Manager

After training as a chef, at 18 I started a long career in the catering industry, working at various establishments before setting up my own catering business in 1996.

I was the owner of the Restaurant at the Chichester tennis club for 8 years, the long hours were difficult to combine with my young family so I moved my business into a successful outside catering business catering for events from small dinner parties to weddings for 200 people.

I have been connected to the club for over 20 years joining with my husband Grahame when we moved to Havant from Chichester in 1999.

Whilst running my business, in 2010 the opportunity came up in the Avenue office to work one day a week, relishing the opportunity to try my hand at something new I applied for the position and was successful. Although I was used to the administrative side of running a business, I was keen to hone my office skills and took myself to college to gain Microsoft qualifications. Over the course of the next 2 years I increased my office hours and in October 2012 I was promoted to Office Manager.

Alongside my position at The Avenue I continued with my outside catering business and also catered for big club events such as County week and club parties until 2017 when after over 30 years in the catering industry I decided to hang up my apron!

My work at the club is very varied In September this year I will celebrate 10 years working at the Avenue and there really could be no better place to work than looking out over our beautiful grass courts on a daily basis.

My spare time is busy, i have 3 grandchildren who keep me on my toes! i play tennis although not as often as I would like, and I like to keep fit walking, running & enjoying the fitness classes at the club, Grahame and I love to travel with a particular love of Asia.

Admin Assistant

I started my career at 17 working in the office of a local Estate Agents working in the office. After a year, I moved to work in a television / video shop undertaking general admin duties, but as new technology started to come out, it made the work more interesting.

I have always been interested in sport and started High Jumping from an early age. I represented Hampshire and England and won the Hampshire County Championships over 6 times. I even got to compete at the UK trials for the Moscow Olympics.

I took a break in my career to have my 2 children but continued to High Jump. After getting an injury I had to stop, so decided to combine my interest in sport and restart my career and trained as Fitness Instructor in 1992, which fitted in well with my growing family. I went on to teach various classes, including Step and Boxercise, in the local area for the next 17 years.

In 2009, an opportunity presented itself to teach fitness classes at The Avenue, first teaching Legs, Bums and Tums and then Spinning. After 3 years I got offered the job as Office Assistant and really love working in the office, with Justine, and I think we make a great team. The role has grown over the years and more recently I have taken on the role of Studio Co-Ordinator and overseeing the social media aspects of the Club.

During my spare time I enjoy cooking, photography and spending time with my friends and family where I have 2 small grandchildren to keep me busy.

Book Keeper/Bar Manager

I began my working career at The Sussex Brewery, Emsworth in 1985, working my way through the ranks from Chief Washer Up to General Manager before leaving to raise my family in 1996.

However, in early 1997, I returned to work at the Sussex Brewery, part-time to fit around my growing family, but this time, as their book-keeper. I had a head for figures, but no accounting qualifications, so took myself back to night school to earn professional qualifications for my new role.

When the pub changed hands in 2012, I was made redundant, but as luck would have it, The Avenue were looking for a new Finance Assistant at this time and I was the successful candidate.

As the Finance Assistants job is a solitary one, when a member of staff retired, i took the opportunity to became one of the club’s bar associates to enable me to meet the members and get back to my roots behind the bar, and when the Bar Manager position became available a year later, it was a natural step for me to fill the role.

More recently, I have dipped my toe into the world of tennis, receiving lessons from Ashley and his team, but my two Border Collie’s take up most of her spare time with long walks and training for local Agility competitions.

The one thing i enjoy more than anything else is organising a good party, so if you have something to celebrate, give me a call!
