Tennis
Introduction
Welcome to Havant’s ‘best kept secret’ – The Avenue Lawn Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club.
If you would like to play tennis on the best grass courts on the south coast, or on our superb all-weather outdoor courts, then come along and try us out.
Our Facilities
Like playing on grass?
For many people it’s the best way to enjoy tennis in the summer. We have 10 fantastic grass courts for member’s to play, but if sometimes you just want to watch, you can do so from the comfort of the clubhouse balcony.
Prefer hard courts or just want to play all-year round?
Not a problem, as we have 7 all weather outdoor courts and you have a choice of surfaces. There are 4 synthetic clay courts and 3 artificial grass courts to choose from.
Competitions & Tournaments
Want competitive play?
We enter men’s, women’s, juniors and veterans teams in local and national competitions.
If you want to learn more about playing team tennis you can contact the men’s or ladies captain here:
In the summer we host top quality tournaments including the International Seniors and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) County Cup events, with the recent addition of a Touchtennis competition.
We are proud to have been recognised as the ‘Seniors Tennis GB club of the year’ in 2017 and to have won the County ‘Tournament of the year’ for the same event in 2019.
The club also holds its own tournaments – is yours the next name on our Champions List?
New Avenue League Ladder
We invite you to enter the new Avenue singles league ladder.
Replacing the previous box leagues and set out initially in a rough order of ability, players can rise up the ladder by challenging higher ranked players (up to five places above them) and winning the match, in which case they move immediately above them in the rankings. If they lose, then both players simply stay where they are.
Players – men and women – may play as often or as little as possible depending on their circumstances, hopefully offering more flexibility to everyone. Play will start on Monday September 19 and continue indefinitely.
Players who are challenged should make every effort to accept the challenge as early as they can, unless hampered by injury, work or other commitments. Players who don’t play during a three-month period will drop three places in the ladder.
Players can join or leave the ladder at any time with any new players slotted in at an appropriate step of the ladder.
The default match format will be best of three normal sets with a tie-break at 6-6. However, to make things as flexible as possible and if both players agree, matches can be two normal sets followed by a third set consisting of a long tie-break up to 10. Alternatively players may also agree a shorter set format – first to four – best of three sets should they wish.
Players who took part in the last box league have been automatically entered but anyone interested in joining can simply contact Martyn Lawrenson, contact details below.
Winners are responsible for sending out results to the above as soon as possible after each match.
