Portsmouth & District Winter League

Ladies Division 1 – Avenue 1 winning draw v Warsash 1 (2-2) – Anna Newman, Jenny Smith, Katie Rowley, Viola Masona (see match photo)

Match report

Our final winter match was against the league winners Warsash. Windy conditions were the order of the day, but we weren’t going to let it affect our drive to win. Katie and Viola flew out of the blocks not dropping a game. 6-0 6-0 Myself and Jenny lost a tight first set 6-4 but drifted away in the 2nd set 6-0. We went into the 2nd round with a 4-game lead. Jenny and I knew as long as we didn’t drop more than 4 games we would get a winning draw. 6-2 6-1 was the result. We shouldn’t have worried though as Katie and Viola narrowly lost 6-4 6-4 so a resounding winning draw was the result. Well done ladies in very windy conditions and against tough opposition. We have held our place in the league. Well done all on a fantastic winter of tennis. Anna Newman.

Mixed Division 3 – Avenue 3 lost to Southsea (1-3) – Paul Whittenham, Alison Clarke, Dawn Wears, Bailey Rowsell

Match report

Avenue Mixed 3 headed to Southsea in the final match of their Winter campaign, knowing that an outright win would be sufficient to overhaul Steep and win Division 3. Southsea had promotion hopes of their own and as expected put out 2 strong pairings. My partner Alison and I had barely found our rhythm by the time we had conceded the first set in our first rubber 6-0 and matters were already beginning to look ominous. However, a change in tactics and a much stronger showing saw us win the 2nd set 7-6 and come from 2-7 behind in the deciding Championship tie-break to lead 9-8 and force a match point. Sadly the next 3 points went the way of our opponents, and we lost the decider 11-9. On the adjacent court, Dawn and Bailey were locked in battle in another extremely close contest but also went down in a Championship tie-break meaning as a result of the first round of rubbers, our title aspirations had disappeared. Undeterred, both of our pairings went into the 2nd round of rubbers with strong determination which saw Bailey and Dawn playing some exhilarating tennis to win their second match in straight sets while there was more heartbreak for Alison and I as we lost our 2nd match on yet another Championship tie-break, again by the score of 11-9. The overall match score was actually tied in terms of games 41-41 to demonstrate how close this match was and a fitting end to a season where the weather has had it’s say on more than one occasion. It just leaves me to thank my marvellous squad once again for their loyalty and support ahead of our Summer League campaign. Paul Whittenham
