Portsmouth & District League

Ladies Division 4 – Avenue 4 winning draw v Abshot (2-2) – Sheila Drummond, Michele Voysey, Louise Charlton,

Match report

The Mary Wallopers weren’t just making their presence felt at Victorious over the Bank Holiday weekend – they were very much in evidence at Abshot Country Club! The two women, both called Mary (& with a combined age of more than 150 years) dished out their walloping to Michele & Sheila. We couldn’t counter their slow- paced, loopy game on the hard courts & lost 6-2, 6-3. Adding to our woes was the discovery afterwards that one of the opposing Marys was a great grandmother, soon to celebrate her 82nd birthday!😅 Fortunately, our 1st pair Delyth & Louise played exceptionally well together & saved the day – conceding only five games across both rubbers to give us the winning draw. So that’s the end of our summer season and we achieved part of what I had hoped for – a mid-table finish. We won more matches than we lost & got into double figures in points, so that’s to be applauded. What we will attempt to build on in the winter season is trying to win more rubbers/sets/games than we concede. It’s definitely within our reach. Thank you to everyone who has turned out this season & good luck to all in the upcoming season. Sheila Drummond

Mens Division 1 – Avenue 1 beat CourtX 2 (4-0) – Lloyd Sampson, Tom Dow, James Rosenthal, James Green

Mixed Division 1 – Avenue 1 beat Lee 1 (3-1) – Katie Rowley, James Rosenthal, Tom Dow, Frances Heale (see team photo)

Ladies Masters Division 1 – Avenue 1 lost to Chichester 1 (1-3) – Heather Halliday, Nicky Woolhead, Anna Newman, Jenny Smith

Match report

This was our last match of the season and was against the current leaders of Division 1 who proved to be just too strong on the day. All matches were played in good spirits with both teams having to battle with the “gusty” conditions throughout! A great season for all players who have represented the Ladies 1 Masters team – excellent effort. Heather Halliday

Mens Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 beat Rowlands Castle (4-0) – Rob Mort, Phil Tusler, Graham Cotterill, Arian Drummond

Match report

Last match of the Summer. Puts us in a good league position level at the top with Ryde Mead who still have one match to play. Rob Mort

Hants & IOW Summer League

Ladies Division 2 – Avenue lost to Riverside B (1-3) – Anna Newman, Jenny Smith, Vicki White, Helen Watson

Match report

Our final fixture of the season was a long away trip to Riverside in Salisbury.  The result would not affect our league positions but we went there looking for a win. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be.

We lost the first 2 rubbers with  Vicki and Helen losing on a 3rd set tiebreak. This would set the scene for the next round which went the same way. Jenny and I managed to win the final rubber. Meaning a loss. We came away using the saying you either win or you learn and there was a lot of positives to take home. A respectable 3rd place overall this summer. Well done all and thanks for playing. Anna Newman

East Hants Summer League

Ladies Division 2 – Avenue beat Graffham A (3-1) – Caron Howe, Dawn Wears, Denise Simper, Sarah Long

Match report

The weather forecast was ghastly for today but after consultation we decided to play  on the Clay during which time we had one 15 minute shower. Caron/Dawn and Denise/Sarah managed a great win by 6 sets to 2. When we played them at Graffham we lost 8-0 albeit to a very strong home team. Jenny Ward
