Match report

It could have been a disaster. They’d shut the M27 and traffic was snarled up, the grass was obstinately damp for our scheduled noon start and we were in a wooden spoon battle. What could possibly go wrong? But in the event, the sun made a welcome return appearance, a steady breeze helped to dry out the courts and our Southsea opponents dodge the queues arriving in good time and ready to do battle. Graham and Mary dispensed with their second pair in short order and retired to the clubhouse for a cup of tea while Adrian and Louise searched desperately for their game. They found it just in time coming back from 1-4 to take the first set in a tiebreak and, with the momentum behind them, clinched the second 6-1 to give us a 2-0 lead. It proved the crucial contest of the match. Although Graham and Mary lost a tight second rubber Adrian and Louise were on a roll by then and all three points were ours. It earned us a position of near respectability in what has been a very tight division bar the runaway leaders. After bookending the season with wins we look forward to the winter with renewed confidence. Adrian Drummond
