Mens Division 4 – Avenue 3 lost to Southsea 2 (0-4) – Matt Hotchkiss, David Parvinmehr, Joe Hopkins, George Bentley

Mixed Division 1 – Avenue 1 lost to Warsash 1 (1–3) – Tom Dow, Viola Masona, James Leonard, Frances Heale

Mixed Division 2 – Avenue 2 winning draw v Active Academy (2-2) – Peter Campbell, Helen Watson, Denise Simper, Phil Broad

Mixed Division 4  -Avenue 4 lost to Ryde Lawn 2 (0-4) – Adrian Drummond, Jess Paige, Louise Charlton, Steve Jones

Match report

Mixed 4 battled hard but got little reward from their match against a strong Ryde Lawn 2 outfit. The visiting men were both powerful servers and both pairs played consistently offering up few chances. In the circumstances, a tally of 20 games against them was to our credit. Adrian Drummond

Mixed Masters Division 1 – Avenue 1 lost to Chichester 1 (1-3) – Jenny Smith, Peter Campbell, Gill Clarke, Neil Crawford

Mixed Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 lost to Chichester 2 (0-4) – Adrian Drummond, Mary Robinson, Dawn Wears, Matt Bennett

Match report

Avenue arrived at Chichester hoping to produce some fireworks of their own on the morning after the Bonfire Night before. Unfortunately such pyrotechnics as they produced were more of the Roman candle than rocket variety – full of sparkle and promise but lacking the extra firepower needed to get over the line. Matt and Dawn came closest, losing their tiebreak decider in the mixed pairs 11-13 after a topsy turvy 1-6, 6-1 rubber. Mary and Adrian had less success despite a late flourish, losing their rubber 1-6, 3-6.  Mary and Dawn endured more tiebreak heartbreak in the battle of the single sexes, losing 8-10 in a vain attempt to force a 10-pointer. Matt and Adrian’s flame flickered and faded as they went down 4-6, 3-6. Still, the chips were plentiful and some compensation for a hard day on the clay. Adrian Drummond

East Hants Winter League

Mens Division 1 – Avenue A drew with Denmead A (2-2) – Joe Hopkins, Lloyd Sampson, David Parvinmehr, James Leonard

Match report

Avenue A extended their recent run of draws, earning a 2-2 result against Denmead A in a hard-fought, mid-week evening fixture. The match was challenging with balls that lasted half a set, damp courts with players slipping all against the backdrop of constant fireworks. The draw keeps Avenue A competitive, showcasing their resilience despite the testing away day circumstances.  

The first pair, Lloyd S and Joe H, came agonisingly close to claiming two full wins for the home side. In their first rubber, they made a strong start, taking the first set comfortably. However, their opponents rallied brilliantly in the second, pushing the score to a decisive tie-break, which Denmead A managed to clinch. Lloyd S and Joe H made sure of a full victory in their second rubber, showcasing their superior form to win both sets easily with scores of 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile, David P and James L faced a tough challenge across their two matches. Their opening rubber saw a dramatic turnaround after they dropped the first set 6-3. They both came back with determination, levelling the match by cruising to a dominant 6-1 win in the second set, which also ended as a split draw. Their final rubber of the fixture ultimately went the way of Denmead 6-4 6-4. A good outcome despite the dead balls and the tricky court conditions.  David Parvinmehr
