Portsmouth & District League

Ladies Division 2 – Avenue 3 lost to Warsash 2 (0-4) – Julia Baker, Zoe Larkin, Anne Treagust, Becky Howarth

Match report

On the hottest day of the year Zoe, Anne, Becky and Julia travelled to Warsash. It was hot but the rain stopped play for the first 20 mins. Once back on the hard purple courts with the humidity rising Warsash got the better of us with the home advantage of the high bouncing balls. Well played team. Julia Baker

Ladies Division 4 – Avenue 4 lost to Denmead (1-3) – Mary Robinson, Katherine Arnold, Heulwen Newman, Sally Barwood

Match report

It was the longest day of the year; the hottest day of the year; & National Smoothie Day (unfortunately, things could have gone a little smoother for our ladies!). Everyone had been eagerly anticipating the match, and were buoyed up for the 1pm start. After seven games of play the teams had to come off court due to rain! After a delay of 30 minutes, play resumed on the grass and the majority of games were long and tiring. All to play for in the second rubbers as the score was 1-1. Frustratingly, both matches in the second half went to championship tie-breaks, with Denmead winning both. An extremely tight match and very little in it, but once again, despite the best efforts of everyone we were unlucky to come away without a point. Sheila Drummond

Ladies Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 lost to Chichester 2 (1-3) – Heulwen Newman, Anne Treagust, Linda Barber, Linda Wainwright
Mens Masters Division 1 – Avenue 1 beat Fishbourne (4-0) – Ian Marks, Richard Marston, Phil Broad, Paul Whittenham (see team photo below)

Match report

Following a drizzly start to the day and much fretting as to whether the weather would allow us to play on the grass or not we managed to get going on time after our grounds chair gave us the go ahead. In the end a convincing 4:0 victory for the Avenue which puts us top of the league on goal difference. Ian Marks

Mixed Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 lost to Ryde Lawn 2 (1-3) – Mark Fullstone, Dawn Wears, Anne Treagust, Stew Wiles

Match report

As we were docking at Fishbourne the rain was coming horizontally at us due to the strong wind. By 11am it stopped. They played a very strong team but at least Anne and Stew won a rubber. Mark Fullstone

Hants & IOW Summer Doubles

Ladies Division 2 – Avenue beat Warsash (3-1) – Katie Rowley, Frances Heale, Anna Newman, Gill Clarke

Match report

Our 2nd match of the summer saw us host Warsash on a scorchingly hot day. A last minute change to our squad saw Frances step in due to illness. Warsash fielded a very strong team. Katie and Frances secured a 6-4 6-4 win in the first rubber. Not quite so straight forward for Gill and I after an 8 week layoff for me but we came through 10-8 in the championship tie break. The 2nd round saw Katie and Frances win 6-0 6-0. Wow. Leaving us with a 3-1 win. Fantastic tennis on a glorious day. Just a side note well done Andy G on your amazing feat in such high temperatures. Mens O55 Division 3 – Avenue C lost to Lyndhurst (1-3) – Stew Wiles, Graham Cotterill, Mike Smith Robert Haines

East Hants Summer League

Ladies Division 2 – Avenue beat Midhurst (4-0) – Caron Howe, Dawn Wears, Denise Simper, Sarah Long

Match report

Caron/Dawn and Denise/Sarah had a spectacular win over Midhurst, 8 sets to 0 and 49 games to 22. Thank you as always for your total commitment. Jenny Ward
