Ladies Division 4 – Avenue 4 losing draw v Alverstoke 3 (2-2) – Sheila Drummond, Ali Thomson, Chloe Treagust, Delyth Jones
Match report
Our final match of the winter season was played in glorious springlike weather & could not have been closer. In a nod to the Six Nations final weekend, we had players with connections to England, Wales, Ireland, Lithuania, Malaysia and Iran. This melting pot of backgrounds & ages produced some sterling play from everyone at times. Ali & Sheila’s first rubber against the visitors’ second pair went on for more than two hours & resulted in a successful championship tie-break, & games with countless deuces. At the half-way stage it was one rubber each with everything to play for.
Delyth & Chloe won their second rubber comprehensively 6-2, 6-2. All in all, we played very well against top of the table Alverstoke & the icing on the cake (quite literally!) was the delicious Victoria sponge that Chloe concocted. Although anchored to the bottom of Division 4, we have had one match tied, & three losing draws, proving that we have been more competitive than score lines perhaps suggest. A better result than last winter & everything to build on for the summer season. Well played everyone 👏😘. Sheila Drummond

Mixed Division 4 – Avenue 4 lost to Steep (1-3) – Adrian Drummond, Katherine Arnold, Ali Thomson, Graham Cotterill
Match report
Avenue 4 came agonisingly close to ending the season on a high against Steep 2 only to be pipped 13-11 in a deciding tiebreak – something that has proved our Achilles heel this season. Unfortunately a winning draw proved just beyond our reach. In spite of our lowly league position there have been many positives from our first winter campaign. Our games won/lost ratio has been better or on a par with teams above us, proving that we are competitive. And we have integrated many new players into a much-changed squad and our increasing familiarity with each other will reap dividends in the summer ahead. It’s been a difficult but very enjoyable season and I would like to thank all our players for their attitude and commitment. Onwards and, hopefully, upwards. Adrian Drummond

Mens Division 1 – Avenue A lost to Steep A (3-5) – Lloyd Sampson, Ross Macpherson, Adam Tolmie, Martyn Lawrenson
Mens Division 4 – Avenue B beat Alton C (2-0) – Steve Jones, Graham Cotterill (no 2nd pairs involved)
Ladies Division 2 – Avenue beat Haslemere C (7-1) – Denise Simper, Alison Clarke, Caron Howe, Dawn Wears
Match report
Alison & Denise and Caron & Dawn had a magnificent win against Haslemere C by 7 sets to 1 and 47 Games to 18. Excellent and well played. Our last match is on Saturday against Swanmore. Currently we are lying 2nd with 51 points to Newman Collard who have 53 points with both teams having one match to play- watch this space!! Jenny Ward
