Portsmouth & District Winter League

Ladies Division 2 – Avenue 3 losing draw v Ryde Lawn 1 (2-2) – Alison Clarke, Caroline MacDowell, Nicolette Lock, Jenny Smith

Match report

Avenue 3s made the trip across to the island to face a strong Ryde Lawn 1 team . Due to illness , Avenue 3s needed a last minute sub and were so very grateful to Jenny Smith for stepping in and playing so well for us alongside partner Caroline . Gaining a hard fought point in our first match of the season was a result ! Well done team ! Alison Clarke

Ladies Division 4 – Avenue 4 lost to Southsea (0-4) – Sheila Drummond, Chloe Treagust, Chris Hill. Sally Barwood

Match report

“Vamos” we chorused as we approached our opening game of the winter season away to Southsea! Unfortunately they countered our rallying cry by bringing out a 21-year-old left handed Spaniard, who played like she was related to 22-times Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal! Still Sally & Sheila could emulate some of those great professionals too – mimicking American Amanda Anisimova in her Wimbledon final in the summer, we went down 6-0, 6-0 against their 1st pair…. Chris & Chloe fared better against this formidable 1st pair, losing 6-0, 6-3. Against Southsea’s 2nd pair we both lost our championship tie-breaks in nail biting fashion- Chris & Chloe by 15-13, & Sally & Sheila by 11-9. A big thanks to Chloe for stepping in at the eleventh hour to replace Delyth, who was ill, & make her debut for Ladies 4. Her ground strokes and enthusiasm were a joy to behold. So the season started in a 4-0 defeat – but even worse news was that due to a communication mix-up between Southsea Tennis Club & The Club House Cafe, no provision for tea had been made! Things can only get better this season… Sheila Drummond

Mens Division 1 – Avenue 1 losing draw v Chichester 1 (2-2) – James Rosenthal, Lloyd Sampson, Matt Boucher, Alister Millard
Mens Division 4 – Avenue 3 beat Warsash 3 (4-0) – Matt Hotchkiss, Andy Gilliatt, Adam Tolmie, Toby Arul-Pragasam

Match report

Sunday brought the first game of the winter season with a tricky home tie against Warsash. With the aim of winning the division we needed a strong start. Adam and Toby were dominant for both of their matches and Andy and I, although making things harder on ourselves, were comfortable. Good fun and a 4-0 win. Matt Hotchkiss

Ladies Masters Division 1 – Avenue 1 beat Ryde Lawn 1 (3-1) – Jenny Smith, Viola Masona, Debbie Berry, Nicky Woolhead

Match report

This is a great result as past matches against the IOW team have always been closely fought with lengthy battles on the court. Great play from all of the team and a very well-deserved win. YIPPEE. Heather Halliday

Mixed Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 losing draw v Ryde Lawn 3 (2-2) – Mark Fullstone, Angie Brown, Caron Howe, Matt Bennett

Match report

Losing draw today. 2 rubbers all, 4 sets all, 40-42 in games. Mark Fullstone
