Portsmouth & District Tennis League
Ladies Division 2 – Avenue 2 beat Warsash 2 (4-0) – Helen Watson, Vicki White, Sarah Long, Nicky Woolhead
Match report
Sunshine, a gentle wind, a baby shower and a mix in games session was the order of the day when Ladies 2 took on Warsash for a mid-table battle. Vicky set the aggressive tone in the warm up with a ball to the body of a Warsash lady, luckily she was ok but the difference between the Avenue grass and Warsash hard courts was clearly a factor in the 4-0 home victory. Big applause to Sarah Long and Nicky Woolhead playing together for the first time. Sarah serving so many aces Nicky lost count. All washed down with tea strawberries and scones. Helen Watson
Mens Division 1 – Avenue 2 lost to Chichester 1 (0-4) – Martyn Lawrenson. Mike Robinson, Matt Hotchkiss, David Parvinmehr
Mixed Division 1 – Avenue 1 beat Chichester 1 (4-0) – Tom Dow, Frances Heale, Natalie Denby, Rowan Smithson
Match report
Tom/Frances smashed them up brutally whilst myself and Ro kept them guessing until both champs tiebreaks!! Natalie Denby
Mixed Division 4 – Avenue 4 lost to Rowlands Castle (1-3) – Adrian Drummond, Jess Paige, Ant Spencer, Netty Hart
Match report
Ant Spencer battled bravely for the best part of two hours with a sprained ankle at Rowlands Castle for no reward. The injury occurred early in the second rubber in the battle of the second pairs and Ant and Netty Hart came agonisingly close – literally in Ant’s case – to taking it to a tiebreak, eventually losing 6-3, 7-5. Rowlands’ first pair won both their rubbers convincingly but Jess Paige and Adrian Drummond had a satisfying 6-1, 6-1 win against the seconds. And it wasn’t all doom and gloom. The sun shone, the tea was lovely and Pompey kicked off their season with an away win. Adrian Drummond
Mixed Division 4 – Avenue 5 beat Alverstoke 2 (3-1) – Andrew Sabin, Katherine Arnold, Neil Joughin, Christine Hill
Match report
A much needed clear win for Avenue Mixed 5 against Alverstoke on Sunday afternoon by 3 rubbers to 1. We set out ever hopeful to gain some elusive points! At the half-way mark, it was one rubber a piece so both sides had at it all to play for. Neil and Chris clinched their rubber first winning their third set championship tie break convincingly 10-2. Leaving it to Andrew and Katherine to seal the deal with a 2-0 win against Alverstoke’s first pair. A lovely afternoons tennis enjoyed by all. Katherine Arnold
Mens Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 beat Warsash 2 (4-0) – Rob Mort, Stuart Newman, Graham Cotterill, Matt Bennett (see team photo below)

Match report
On a hot, windy day and on bouncy tarmac, the match was closer than the score line suggests. Rob Mort
Mixed Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 tied with Warsash 2 (2-2) – Mark Fullstone, Angie Brown, Sarah Long, Graham Cotterill
Match report
Good match against Lee with all players making a valuable contribution. For only the second time in my recollection the match was tied 2-2, 5-5, 33-33. Mark Fullstone
Mixed Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 lost to CourtX (1-3) – Mark Fullstone, Sarah Long, Sheila Drummond, Adrian Drummond
Match report
3-1, 7-3, 46-29 loss against a strong Court X team. Unfortunately both the championship tie-breaks did not go our way. A valiant performance by the team. Mark Fullstone
Hants & IOW Summer League
Mens O45s Division 3 – Avenue B beat Andover (3-1) – Peter Campbell, Colin Airton, Gavin McCue, Richard Marston
Match report
Gavin McCue, and Richard Marston took both rubbers convincingly, dropping a rather careless 5 games in total, well played indeed…Colin Airton and Peter Campbell battled to a close win in the first rubber and dropped the second. This victory makes the O45 team league champions and earns promotion for next season. Well played team. Peter Campbell
