Portsmouth & District League

Mens Division 1 – Avenue 1 beat Lee 1 (3-1) – James Rosenthal, Lloyd Sampson, Richard Steeds, James Leonard
Mens Division 2 – Avenue 3 lost to Lee 2 (0-4) – Adam Tolmie, George Knight, Phil Rickard, David Parvinmehr

Match report

Enjoyable way to spend a Sunday. Good to see George back, he really grew into it with big serving and although we had long rallies and lots of deuce games we could not see it through. We agreed we weren’t playing our best at the same time, I dropped off a cliff but all in all good fun and some great play. Phil looked good with strong service and should be pleased with his level. Thanks for stepping in mate. David has hurt his ankle, left it all out there and was serving and volleying well. Played in good spirit and can’t be upset with the result. Cheers boys. Chips and beer on Lee…happy days. Adam Tolmie

Mens Division 3 – Avenue 4 lost to Ryde Lawn 2 (1-3) – Adrian Drummond, Steve Jones, Ant Spencer, Olly King

Match report

Men’s 4 came agonisingly close to securing a draw against Ryde Lawn but again came away with nothing to show for a battling effort. On an overcast, thundery day the match started on grass and Ryde’s 1st pair proved too strong for Adrian Drummond and Steve Jones, who unveiled a series of crunching first serves on his debut. Olly King and Ant Spencer thought they had clinched their rubber 10-8 in a tiebreak but were denied by a late baseline call and unsurprisingly lost their rhythm and the tiebreak 15-13. The match resumed on the clay after a downpour and once again Ryde’s first pair prevailed in a well contested rubber. Steve and Adrian gained a small measure of revenge and no little satisfaction from their tiebreak victory against the seconds but, as the cliche goes, it was too little, too late. Adrian Drummond

Mixed Division 1 – Avenue 1 beat Chichester 1 (4-0) – Lloyd Sampson, Frances Heale, Natalie Denby, Rowan Smithson
Ladies Masters Division 1 – Avenue 1 beat Warsash 1 (3-1) – Anna Newman, Viola Masona, Katy Loh, Nicky Woolhead

Match report

Our team had an enjoyable match at Warsash with lots of long, exciting rallies. We achieved a 3-1 win so very well done team. Jackie Edney

Ladies Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 lost to Ryde Mead (1-3) – Becky Howarth, Anne Treagust, Katherine Arnold, Linda Wainwright

Mens Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 beat Ryde Lawn 2 (4-0) – Rob Mort, Matt Bennett, Adrian Drummond, Ant Spencer
Mixed Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 lost to Chichester 2 (1-3) – Mark Fullstone, Angie Browm, Stew Wiles, Dawn Wears

Match report

A tale of 3 tie-breaks. Losing 3-1, 7-4, 46-35. Mark Fullstone

Hants & IOW Summer League

Mens Division 3B – Avenue A beat Lyndhurst (4-0) – Mike Robinson, Tom Dow, Matt Boucher, Cameron Clarke
Ladies Division 2 – Avenue lost to David Lloyd West End (1-3) – Anna Newman, Jenny Smith, Vicki White, Liz Lim

Match report

We travelled to the league leaders knowing it would be a tough match. The added bonus was that we could play indoors. So nice to play with no wind and the matches were hard fought. The opposition had 2 county players available so unfortunately we came away with a 3-1 loss but I’m so proud of our team. Vicki made her debut and played excellently, taking the step up in pace in her stride. Well done everyone. Anna Newman

Hants & IOW Seniors League

Mens O45 Division 3 – Avenue B beat Salisbury B (3-1) – Peter Campbell, Richard Marston, Martyn Lawrenson, Ian Marks

Match report

O45 match at home v Salisbury on Tuesday evening ended with a solid 3-1 victory for The Avenue. Richard Marston and Peter Campbell had a slight wobble dropping the second set in the first rubber but cleaned up in the tie break, Ian Marks and Martyn Lawrenson took their first rubber on a tie break which was a vital win for the team. Peter and Richard blasted their way to a quick win in the second rubber, retiring to the bar whilst Ian and Martyn battled it out in fading light. Fortunately for them, there was some grub left when they eventually finished… Peter Campbell

Mens O55 Division 1 – Avenue A lost to Winchester B (1-3) – Martin Mallick, Peter Campbell, Ian Marks, Simon Hughes
Mens O55 Division 1 – Avenue A lost to Winchester A (0-4) – Neil Crawford, Simon Hughes, Martin Mallick, Ian Marks
Mens O55 Division 3 – Avenue B beat Wellow (4-0) – Matt Bennett, Nick Castle, Dennis Greenwood, Rob Mort

East Hants Summer League

Ladies Division 2 – Avenue lost to Graffham A (0-4) – Denise Simper, Sarah Long, Caron Howe, Dawn Wears

Match report

Really tough team! I think they were the best we have played. I think we’ll do better on grass, they were quite loopy, but very good. Jenny Ward
