Mens Division 2 – Avenue 2 beat Warsash 2 (4-0) – Mike Robinson, Lloyd Sampson, Rob Fearnley, Ross MacPherson

The season kicked off with a roaring victory against Warsash 2s who brought an unbalanced team to the Avenue Clay. Warsash’s second pair were overwrought by the guile and experience of Ross MacPherson and Lloyd Sampson, and the hard hitting of Rob Fearnley and Mike Robinson, picking up just two games across their four sets. Warsash’s first pair were very strong and battled hard. Ultimately going down in two championships tiebreak 3-setters. Gripping stuff! Well played boys – a great start to the season! Mike Robinson

Mixed Division 4 – Avenue 4 lost to Chichester 2 (0-4) – Adrian Drummond, Megan Gibbs, Rob Mort,

As Mixed 4 approached their first summer campaign in the Portsmouth League the omens were not good. Sickness had forced a late rejig with Adrian coming in as sub, we were facing the pre-season favourites, and Storm Amy was looming threateningly. As expected, Chichester were very strong; as forecast, Amy barrelled in with gusts of 50mph; as feared, perhaps, Chichester triumphed. But we went down fighting. Rob and Megan, a new combination, went 5-1 up in a deciding tiebreak in their first rubber and had two match points before succumbing, agonisingly, 10-12. They took the same fighting spirit into their second rubber, again just getting on the wrong side of another tiebreak. Adrian and Delyth, also a new combination, battled hard in their first rubber, eventually losing 6-7, 3-6 and then ran out of steam in the second rubber. Still, given the opposition and the conditions it was a creditable performance and as always at Chichester, the chips were good. Adrian Drummond

Ladies Masters Division 2 – Avenue 2 losing draw v Rowlands Castle (2-2) – Denise Simper, Alison Clarke, Becky Howarth, Heulwen Newman

Match report

A very tough match v Rowlands started at 10.30 finishing at 2pm.  Alison/Denise and Becky/Heulwen fought very well against their very strong team in a losing draw, 41 games to 36.  Well done team. Jenny Ward
