Monday 25th August
The Avenue Tennis Club was bathed in glorious sunshine on Bank Holiday Monday, the perfect stage for the annual charity tennis tournament. With all 10 grass courts in action and 40 players taking part, the club was alive with colour, laughter, and the rhythmic sound of racket on ball, interrupted only by the occasional blast of the timekeepers whistle.
Spectators and players alike were treated to some truly memorable tennis, with moments of skill and flair that will be talked about for weeks. More importantly, the day raised a fantastic £400 for Verity’s Gift, a local charity supporting children and young adults.
At the halfway mark, tradition took over as glasses of Pimms were served, adding a refreshing twist to proceedings and, in some cases, inspiring a few very unusual shots in the second half of play. Off court, Mike and Sylvia Robinson kept spirits high by serving up delicious BBQ treats, ensuring no one went hungry as the competition reached its climax.
After the eight rounds were complete, players and supporters gathered on the clubhouse balcony for the much anticipated prize announcements. Congratulations went to Andrew Palmer, who claimed the men’s crown, and Sarah Long, the leading lady.
It was a day of fun, friendship, and fundraising, proof once again of the wonderful community spirit at The Avenue Tennis Club.
